 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Read all instructions carefully before using this appliance.  This applies to all models.

Important:  During a power failure, switch off the cooktop.

Note: The instructions in this manual are not meant to cover all possible conditions and situations that may happen.  Common sense and caution must be practiced when operating and maintaining the appliance.

Ψ      Use cooktop for its intended use as described in this Use and Care Guide.  Do not use your appliance for warming or heating the room.

Ψ      Remove all packaging materials before installing of the cooktop.  Dispose of all packing material, including the carton and plastic bags after unpacking the appliance, in proper manner.  Packaging materials are not suitable for children’s use.

Ψ      Be sure to properly disconnect the power to the cooktop at the circuit breaker or fuse box in the case of an emergency.

Ψ      DISCONNECT the cooktop power supply at the household distribution panel by switching off the circuit breaker or removing the fuse before any service or repair.

Ψ      The repair or replacement of any part of the cooktop is not recommended at anytime in this guide.  A qualified technician must perform the service. Modifying or altering the cooktop may result in voiding the warranty.

Ψ      Do not leave children alone or unattended while the cooktop is in use. This may result in serious injury or burns.  Do not allow anyone to climb, stand or hang onto the cooktop.

Ψ      Do not touch surface elements or areas near these elements during or after use. Keep all clothing or other flammable materials away from these areas until they are cool. Never wear loose fitting or hanging garments while using the cooktop.  Cleaning of the cooktop should be done when the cooktop surface is completely cooled.

Ψ      The surface of the cooktop may retain heat after you turn off the cooktop. Be careful before touching the surface.

Ψ      Use only dry potholders and do not let these touch the hot surface units.  Burns from steam may be the result of using moist or damp potholders on hot surfaces.  Never use a towel or other bulky cloth in place of a potholder.

Ψ      Do not store flammable materials near the cooktop.  Do not let cooking grease or other flammable materials accumulate on or near the cooktop.  Do not heat unopened food containers because pressure can build up and possibly causing injury.  The use of a pressure cooker is allowed.

Ψ      In the event of grease fires, DO NOT pick up the flaming pan.  Use a pan lid, baking soda or fire extinguisher to put out the fire.  NEVER use water on grease fires.

Ψ      Remember which knob controls each heating element.

Ψ      Use cookware with flat bottoms that can cover the surface heating element. Cookware should match the size of the surface elements.

Ψ      Use only metal, glass, ceramic, earthenware or other glazed cookware suitable for cooking. Please check the manufacturer’s recommendations for cooktop use.

Keep these instructions handy for future references.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Important: Read and follow all instructions.

Warning:
Have a qualified technician or electrician install the cooktop.  Improper installation may cause severe shock or fire damage. Ensure that the cooktop is properly grounded and is installed in accordance with the provided installation instructions.

Visually inspect the frame, control panel, and surface to ensure they are not damaged before setting up the cooktop

Before inserting the unit into the cutout, the cooktop should be connected to a grounded junction box.

Note to Installer:  Please leave these instructions with the owner.

Note:  Avoid placing cabinets above the cooktop, if possible, to reduce the risk of burns or fire.  However, if a cabinet is placed over the cooktop, install a range hood that is about 5 inches thick below the cabinet.  A minimum clearance of 30 inches should be allowed above the Cooktop.  However, if the clearance is less than 30 inches the cabinet bottom must be protected with flame retardant millboard at least 1/4” thick and covered with 28-gauge sheet steel or 0.020” thick sheet metal.

(A)   14 1/4"

(B)    19 1/4"

(C)  1-3/4”

To ensure accuracy, it is advisable to maintain the suggested cutout dimensions of the countertop and the minimum clearance of the cabinets:

Minimum Clearance Dimensions

·        13” max. depth of unprotected overhead cabinets

·        30” min. clearance from countertop to unprotected overhead surface

·        3-3/4” min. clearance from cut-out to side wall on the left of the unit

·        6” min. clearance from cut-out to side wall on the right of the unit

·        18” min. height from countertop to nearest cabinet on either side of the unit

This cooktop is designed to fit easily into cabinets, though some cabinets may require modifications.  A 3-3/4-inch wide flat area is required around the edge of opening for supporting the unit.  The cooktop must be level and sit squarely into the countertop opening. It is also important that the wall coverings, countertops and cabinets around the cooktop can withstand heat of up to 93.330 C (2000F) generated by the cooktop.  Make sure the wires are not pinched.

When installing the cooktop unit, locate the mounting parts, remove screws from the cooktop, then bolt the provided brackets to the sides of the cooktop.  Insert the cooktop into the cut-out opening ensuring that it is parallel to the front edge of the countertop and that all clearances are met.  However, before dropping in the cooktop into the cut-out, put silicon around the corners of the cut-out to secure the cooktop firmly. Secure the cooktop permanently into place by screwing the brackets into the cabinet sides.

Electrical connections

Important – Observe and follow all governing codes and ordinances.

Note to installer: Be sure to leave these instructions with the consumer.

Caution: For safety, remove the fuse or disconnect the power at the circuit breaker before the installation.

The cooktop must be supplied with the correct voltage and frequency as specified on the unit serial plate.  The appliance cable must be connected to a properly grounded, individual branch circuit, protected by circuit breakers or fuses having amperage as indicated on the serial plate.

Swift Canada recommends the use of a thermally protected breaker to be positioned below the cooktop to increase the safety condition to the owner.

The services of a qualified electrician must be used for electrical wiring and the installation of your cooktop.  After installation, have the qualified electrician show you where you can disconnect the power to the cooktop at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This is necessary in case of emergency.

Keep a reference of the electric codes that apply in your area.  Failure to wire your cooktop according to governing codes could result in a hazardous condition.  If there are no local codes, your cooktop must be wired and fused to meet the requirements of the Canadian electric code, CSA C22.1, part 1.  If in the US, follow the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70- latest edition, governing electric range installations.

Continuity and connectivity must exist between the appliance and an effective grounding system.  The power cord must not come in contact with the cook top.  This would result in the power cord to become hot and shock, personal injury or explosion may occur.  Never use an extension cord to connect the cooktop to the main electrical supply.  Before servicing, disconnect power supply by removing the fuse, unplugging the unit or manually ‘tripping’ the circuit breaker.

Use a four-wire, single phase, AC 208 or 240-volt, 60-Hertz electrical system.  The cooktop flexible armoured cable must be firmly attached to the junction box and the flexible conduit securely attached to the connector.  (The junction box is not included with the appliance).  Install an approved junction box at least 11 in. up to maximum of 18 in. below top of cabinet.   Use entire length of conduit provided when making the wire connections

Options:

Connection to a 4-conductor branch circuit: attach the cooktop grounding lead (bare copper) to the residence-grounding conductor (bare copper) in accordance with local codes.

Connection to a 3-conductor branch circuit: (a 3 conductor armoured cable is normally supplied with cook tops using radial elements only).  Connect the cooktop red lead to the branch circuit red lead and the cooktop black lead to the branch circuit black lead in accordance with local codes.

OPERATION TIPS and COOKING GUIDE

Energy-saving ideas

Ψ      Turn elements off when cooking is completed.

Ψ      Thaw out frozen foods before cooking.

Ψ      The use of lids when cooking helps speed up the cooking process.

Ψ      Use medium to heavyweight flat-bottomed pans with tight fitting lids that match the size of the elements.  Avoid using pans that are smaller than elements.  Never use a pan that is extended more than 1 inch over the edge of the surface unit.  Choose pans made of metals that conduct heat efficiently.  Aluminium cookware conducts heat faster than other metals, but is not recommended.

Note: The use of a Wok with a metal ring that extends beyond the element is not suggested because when the ring traps heat, the surface element and cooktop surface could be damaged.  Also, do not use two elements to heat one large pan or allow pots and pans to boil dry.

Setting Surface Controls

Place the pan on the surface element.

Push the knob in and turn to desired heat setting.

The surface indicator light will glow when any heat element is on.  Always turn the control to OFF when you finish cooking or before removing the pan.

The far left side burner of the cooktop is provided with a unique built-in simmer control.

CARE AND CLEANING

Proper care and cleaning are important for your cooktop.  Before cleaning any part of the cooktop, be sure all controls are turned OFF.   Let cooktop parts cool before touching or handling.

Surfaces

Clean the cooktop surface after use to prevent accumulation of stains and spills.  Do not use a steel wool pad to clean the glass surface.  Use a dry, clean cloth with ceramic surface cleaner when cleaning then wipe and buff the surface.  Use Swift Canada Ceramic Surface Cleaner supplied with your cooktop for best results.

Cleaning Glass Cooktop

·        To maintain and protect the glass of the cooktop, use Swift Canada ceramic cleaner only.

·         Frequent cleaning and maintenance will keep the cooktop in great condition and will last you a long time.

·        Warning: Damage to the glass surface may occur if you use scrub pads other than the pad included with your cooktop.

·        Before cleaning burned on residue, allow surface to cool then spread small amount of cleaner on the area of residue.  Rub to remove the dirt. Repeat steps as needed.

  •  For heavy burnt residue use a single edged razor blade scraper, supplied with your cooktop at 45o angle against the glass surface and scrape the soil. Apply pressure as needed

  •  Remove metal marks with ceramic cleaners.

Control knobs

Clean the control knobs with water and mild soap after use.  Rinse and polish dry with a soft, clean cloth.  Control knobs may be removed for easier cleaning.  Gently pull the control knobs straight off the stem.  Wash them in soapy water or hot water solution.  Dry with a soft cloth and replace them properly.
