Ψ      Use the cook top for its intended use as described in this Manual.  Do not use your appliance for warming or heating the room.

DISCONNECT the cooktop power supply at the household distribution panel by switching off the circuit breaker or removing the fuse before any service or repair.

Ψ      A qualified technician must perform the repair or replacement of any part of the cook top. Modifying or altering the cook top will result in voiding the warranty.

Ψ      Remove all packaging materials before using the cook top.  Dispose of all packing material including the carton and plastic bags after unpacking the appliance in a proper manner.  Keep packing material away from children.  Packaging materials are not suitable for children’s use as this may cause bodily harm.

Ψ      Do not leave children alone or unattended while the cook top is in use. This may result in serious injury or burns.  Do not allow anyone to climb, stand or hang onto the cook top.

Ψ      Do not touch surface elements or areas near these elements during or after use. Keep all clothing or other flammable materials away from these areas until they are cool. Never wear loose fitting or hanging garments while using the cook top.  Cleaning of the cook top should be done when the cook top surface is completely cooled.

Ψ      Use only dry potholders and do not let these touch the hot surface units.  Burns from steam may result from use of moist or damp potholders on hot surfaces.  Never use a towel or other bulky cloth in place of a potholder.

Ψ      Do not store flammable materials near the cook top.  Do not let cooking grease or other flammable materials accumulate on or near the cook top.  Do not heat unopened food containers because pressure could build up and possibly cause injury.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Important: Read and follow all instructions.  Make sure power is turned off.

Warning:   Have a qualified technician or electrician install the cook top.  Improper installation may cause severe shock or fire damage.   Ensure that the cook top is properly grounded and is installed in accordance with the provided installation instructions.

Visually inspect the frame, control panel and surface to ensure they are not damaged before setting up the cook top.   Before inserting the unit into the cut-out, the cook top should be connected to a grounded junction box to ensure that the appliance is electrically grounded in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code In Canada or the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70 in the United States.

Note to installer: Be sure to leave these instructions with the owner.

Note:  Avoid placing cabinets above the cook top, if possible, to reduce the risk of burns or fire.  However, if a cabinet is placed over the cook top, install a range hood that is about 5 inches thick below the cabinet.  A minimum clearance of 30 inches should be allowed above the Cook top. However, if the clearance is less than 30 inches, the cabinet bottom must be protected with flame retardant millboard at least 1/4” thick and covered with 28-gauge sheet steel or 0.020” thick copper or other sheet metal.

To ensure accuracy, it is advisable to maintain the suggested cut-out dimensions of the countertop and the minimum clearance of the cabinets:

Minimum Clearance Dimensions

Ψ      13” max. depth of unprotected overhead cabinets

Ψ      30” min. clearance from countertop to unprotected overhead surface

Ψ      3-3/4” min. clearance from cut-out to side wall on the left of the unit

Ψ      6” min. clearance from cut-out to side wall on the right of the unit

Ψ      18” min. height from countertop to nearest cabinet on either side of the unit

This cook top is designed to fit easily into cabinets, though some cabinets may require modifications.  As specified above, a 3-3/4-inch wide flat area is required around the edge of opening for supporting the unit.  The cook top must be level and sit squarely into the countertop opening.  It is also important that the wall coverings, countertops and cabinets around the cook top can withstand heat of up to 93.330 C (2000F) generated by the cook top. Make sure the wires are not pinched.  The above dimensions also apply to portable models.

When installing the cook top unit, locate the mounting parts, remove screws from the cook top, then bolt the brackets provided to the sides of the cook top.  Insert the cook top into the cut-out opening ensuring that it is parallel to the front edge of the countertop and that all clearances are met.  However, before dropping in the cook top into the cut-out, put silicon around the corners of the cut-out to secure the cook top firmly. Secure the cook top permanently into place by screwing the brackets into the cabinet sides.

Electrical connections

Important – Observe and follow all governing codes and ordinances

Caution: For safety, remove the fuse or disconnect the power at the circuit breaker before the installation.

The cook top must be supplied with the correct voltage and frequency as specified on the unit serial plate.  The appliance cable must be connected to a properly grounded, individual branch circuit, protected by circuit breakers or fuses having the correct amperage as indicated on the serial plate.

Swift Canada recommends the use of a thermally protected breaker to be positioned below the cook top to increase the safety condition of owners.

A qualified electrician must be used for electrical wiring and installation of your cook top.  After installation, have the qualified electrician show you where you can disconnect the power to the cook top at the circuit breaker or fuse box.  This is necessary in case of emergency.

Keep reference of the electric codes that apply in your area.  Failure to wire your cook top according to governing codes could result in a hazardous condition.  If there are no local codes, your cook top must be wired and fused to meet the requirements of the Canadian Electric Code, CSA C22.1, part 1.  If in the US, follow the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70- latest edition, governing electric range installations.

Continuity and connectivity must exist between the appliance and an effective grounding system.  The power cord must not come in contact with the cook top.  This would result in the power cord to become hot and shock, personal injury or explosion may occur.

Never use an extension cord to connect the cook top to the main electrical supply.  Before servicing, disconnect power supply by removing the fuse, unplugging the unit or manually ‘tripping’ the circuit breaker.

Use a four-wire, single phase, AC 208 or 240-volt, 60-Hertz electrical system.  The cook top flexible armoured cable must be firmly attached to the junction box and the flexible conduit securely attached to the connector.  (The junction box is not included with the appliance).  Install an approved junction box (or thermally protected breaker) at least 11 in. up to maximum of 18 in. below top of cabinet.   Use entire length of conduit provided when making the wire connections.

Options:

Connection to a 4-conductor branch circuit: attach the cook top grounding lead (bare copper) to the residence-grounding conductor (bare copper) in accordance with local codes.

Connection to a 3-conductor branch circuit: (a 3 conductor armoured cable is normally supplied with cook tops using radial elements only).  Connect the cook top red lead to the branch circuit red lead and the cook top black lead to the branch circuit black lead in accordance with local codes.

Open the front of the cabinet doors below the cook top when the cook top is in place and insert the wires from the conduit through the opening of the junction box.  Link up the red and black leads from the cook top conduit to the corresponding leads in the junction box and once the connections are made, secure wires together using wire nuts.  Note that if there are no cabinet doors below the cook top, the wire connections must be made before positioning the cook top into the cut-out opening.

OPERATION TIPS and COOKING GUIDE

Energy-saving ideas

Turn elements off when cooking is completed.

The use of lids when cooking helps speed up the cooking process.

Use medium to heavyweight flat-bottomed pans with tight fitting lids that match the size of the elements.  Avoid using pans that are smaller than the elements.  Never use a pan that is extended more than 1 inch over the edge of the surface unit.  Choose pans made of metals that conduct heat efficiently.  Aluminium cookware conducts heat faster than other metals but is not recommended.

Setting Surface Controls

Place the pan on the surface element.

Push the knob in and turn to desired heat setting.

The surface indicator light will glow when any heat element is on.  Always turn the control to OFF when you finish cooking or before removing the pan.

The cook top has two small front elements each with 1500 watts, a far right side element with 2600 watts and a far left side element with 2100 watts.  All switches have a unique built in simmer control that are current sensitive.  Therefore they can handle either 110 volts or 220 volts.
